Under the Ice

About

"Under the Ice" was written entirely in my digital audio workspace. The goal of this project was to create background music for video footage of water and life beneath the ice. I chose to use electronic instruments in order to create an ethereal and other-worldly atmosphere as beneath the ice seems like a completely different world. Additionally, the delay and pitch bending effects on the synthesizers and electronic vibraphone I used add to the under water atmosphere. As I listen to "Under the Ice" I am reminded of how sounds actually bend and augment when heard under water.

I wrote "Under the Ice" several years ago and therefore I do not remember all the details of my process, however, I know that I mainly wrote this piece through experimentation. My process was very freeform and I tried to layer and experiment with different lines and effects until I was happy with the finished product. Lastly, this was my first experience composing to the timing of a video and I found this process to be very interesting. I look forward to more projects in which I can compose based on video content.
